Phuket residents criticised the police for releasing a man just two days after his arrest for an unprovoked, vicious assault on an unnamed foreign woman.
The Phuket Times shared a video of the assault on April 4. The incident occurred at around 1pm on Thep Kasattri Road in the Thalang area of Phuket.
The video showed the foreign victim standing on a footpath when a 40 year old man, whose identity remains undisclosed, approached her and suddenly pulled her hair. The woman reportedly struck his hand in an attempt to free herself.
She tried to run away, but the man grabbed her hair tightly before punching her and pushing her to the ground. He then repeatedly kicked her until a foreign couple and a Thai man, who witnessed the attack, intervened.

The Thai man, wearing a motorcycle helmet, pushed the attacker away, prompting him to leave the scene. He walked away calmly, showing no sign of remorse. Both locals and foreign tourists present were shocked by the incident.

Officers from Mueang Phuket Police Station arrested the man shortly after the attack. He claimed he had assaulted the tourist while under the influence of alcohol. Officers did not confirm whether he was suffering from any mental illness.
On April 7, the Phuket Times reported that residents had seen the man wandering around Phuket Old Town. Many questioned why the police had released him despite his violent behaviour. Locals expressed their concerns in the comments.

“A burden to society. He caused panic among the public and made people anxious about travelling around Phuket Old Town. He could harm someone else in the future if no strict measures are implemented.”
“They released him, are you sure? What if he starts using a knife? This is a tourist destination. Who is ensuring the safety of tourists and people in the area?”
“Who’s going to be the next victim? Are there no government officials to handle this?”
“Perhaps Phuket needs a new psychiatric hospital.”
“Arrested and released two hours later.”

According to a report by the Phuket Smart News Facebook page, police stated that the foreign tourist did not wish to press charges against the man.
